Sutherland Amnesty Network

What's stopping you from helping Human Rights?

Sometimes getting involved in activism leads to burnout or maybe you don't know where to fit in when starting your volunteer journey.

It can seem futile and fruitless not seeing the results sooner than we hoped but in this people powered movement, we can't lose sight of what matters:

Universal Human Rights that applies to anyone; of any culture, class, or race.

The 'Sutherland Amnesty Network' believes Human Rights starts at our very doorstep.

The "Sutherland Amnesty Network" believes it doesn't need to be a challenge to get into volunteering or for it to be so dauting to look at the road ahead and behind.

Human rights start at 'Our Very Doorstep'. Very literally too. Here are just some ways you can help advocate for human rights in our own backyard:

  • From embracing and uplifting multicultural communities.

Article 2 of the UDHR: You should never be discriminated against for any reason. Rights belong to all people, whatever our differences.

  • Connecting people to the services they need most,

Article 14 of the UDHR: You have the right to seek and to enjoy asylum from persecution in other countries,

Article 23 of the UDHR: You have the right to work, to good working conditions, to equal pay for equal work and to form and join unions

Article 26 of the UDHR: You have the right to an education.

  • To sharing excess clothing and food with our neighbors and community members

Article 25: You have the right to a decent life, including enough food, clothing, housing, medical care and social services

As you can see, there are plenty of ways to get involved!

Interested in volunteering? Helping your community? Fighting for human rights?

Known for our annual letter writing event, where up to 300 attendees far and wide come to demand justice for various international HR Abuses and violations. The work from the thousands of letter writers across the country have helped the release of people like Salma al-Shehab, who was arrested in Saudi Arabia for tweeting in support of women’s rights and released in February 2025.

However, the journey in Sutherlands for Amnesty has been a turbulent and inspiring one. Bringing together all walks of life towards this one common goal of human dignity, with some of the friendliest faces still here and unfortunately now moved on. A legacy that will linger beyond whoever convenes the group.

It's a history that has hit powerfully, but one that has come and gone, but never stayed down. Given the world, that is the definition of the Shire. A place of growth, renewal, and persistence.

STATUS UPDATE, JULY 2025:

The group is in a process of redevelopment and reconnection.

With plans to mix what the shire does best and spread letter writing beyond an annual event but also bring a new focus of 'Human Rights on Our Doorstep' Aided by new forms of technology and improved accessibility to volunteering.

We hope to connect more with our community. From reaching out to local churches, organisations, and activists to see how we can work hand-in-hand.

To co-hosting and running various community mutual aid events such as : Community Clothes & Food Sharing, Legal and Community Resource Days, and 'What Matters To You, And What's Your favourite Coffee?" days!

And in time, we hope to run our own 'Amnesty Activist Action: Training to be a HR Advocate' training sessions for new and experienced volunteers alike.

As of June-August, the group will be setting up infrastructure, IT, and finding new volunteers interested.

In this time of redevelopment, we are looking for more members to help with administration and volunteer recruitment, so please if that sounds like you, join us on this page and let the convener know when they reach out to you!
